By simultaneously adding muscle while dropping body fat, you’ve found the best way to build muscle. Some call this the “Holy Grail” of gaining muscle. Not a lot of people understand how to accomplish this, since they have always been instructed to bulk up with a lot of protein and then work on losing the weight.

The “Bulking Up” Technique of the 1980s is Ineffective

In the 1908s, not a lot was really understood about gaining muscle mass and keeping fit, at least when compared with what is understood today. No one had heard of intermittent fasting or creatine back then. The approach that most people relied on to gain muscle was to consume tremendous amounts of protein. It was also thought that eating every couple of hours was the best way to gain muscle mass. So I really can’t blame you if you used the bulking-up approach in the 80s or even early 90s.

Fitness Magazines and Many Bodybuilding Sites are WAY Behind the Times

Brainwashed by what they learned in the 80s, writers for large body building sites and fitness magazines are still pumping out this outdated information. To dramatically change beliefs and admit that you’ve been wrong all of these years is hard for most people to do. Another problem is that both of these sources are reliant on advertising from supplement companies, so their opinions are extremely biased. Sometimes I feel like I’ve traveled to the past in a time machine when I read fitness magazines these days!

This is How We Should Be Thinking About Muscle Mass Development…

Building muscle is MORE training-based and LESS nutrition-based than you have been taught. Did you know that it is possible to gain muscle while in a calorie deficit? All you have to do is look at prisoners and see how huge they get when locked up. It’s not a diet consisting of a lot of protein that’s making them large; it’s the amount of training they get. When you grasp the concept that the best way to build muscle is to focus on your workouts, you are going to drop fat at the same time you build muscle. All you have to do is workout hard and don’t eat as much.

Train for Muscle Gains While Following a Low Calorie Diet

People will often eat a ton of calories while they are training to gain muscle. They are actually putting on body fat from too many calories while gaining muscle. What if they trained for muscle while eating less calories than what they burn? This way, they would be losing fat by eating less and building muscle mass at the same time. Because it creates the greatest transformation, gaining muscle while losing body fat is the best way to build muscle.
